  34. 2.  EXTRACTING THE CATDISK PROGRAM FILES AND DOCUMENTATION
  35.  
  36. As CATDISK has evolved during its development, it has grown in size and all of
  37. the programs and documentation no longer fit on a 360K floppy disk.  The
  38. program files are provided in a self-extracting LHA archive file called
  39. CATPROGS.EXE and the documentation is in a similar file called CATDOCS.EXE.
  40.  
  41. If you are running on low density 360K 5.25" floppy disks, do the following:
  42.  
  43.  1) Put the CATDISK distribution disk in drive B:
  44.  2) Put a blank, formatted disk in drive A:
  45.  3) Log onto Drive A:
  46.  4) Type "B:CATPROGS" <Enter> (without the quotes, of course).
  47.  5) The program files will be uncompressed to the blank disk in A:
  48.  6) Remove that diskette and label it "CATDISK PROGRAM FILES."
  49.  7) Insert another blank diskette and type "B:CATDOCS" <Enter>.
  50.  8) The documentation files will be decompressed to the blank disk in A:
  51.  9) Copy the file README.1ST to the disk in A:
  52. 10) Remove that diskette and label it "CATDISK DOCUMENTATION FILES."
  53.  
  54. If you are running on low density 720K 3.5" floppy disks, do the following:
  55.  
  56.  1) Put the CATDISK distribution disk in drive B:
  57.  2) Put a blank, formatted disk in drive A:
  58.  3) Log onto Drive A:
  59.  4) Type "B:CATPROGS" <Enter> (without the quotes, of course).
  60.  5) The program files will be uncompressed to the blank disk in A:
  61.  6) Now enter the command "B:CATDOCS" <Enter>.
  62.  7) The documentation files will be decompressed to the blank disk in A:
  63.  8) Copy the file README.1ST to the disk in A:
  64.  9) Remove the diskette and label it "CATDISK PROGRAM FILES & DOCUMENTATION."

  66. All other forms of disk should have enough capacity to accept all of the
  67. files.  Simply execute CATPROGS.EXE and CATDOCS.EXE from the directory in which
  68. the two files reside delete CATPROGS.EXE and CATDOCS.EXE after each is
  69. completed.

  71. You may then proceed with setting up CATDISK for operation as described in the
  72. user manual.

  76. 3. IMPORTANT:  UPGRADING YOUR CATALOG FILES TO THIS VERSION.
  77.  
  78. Prior To V2.10
  79. --------------

  81. As there is now more information being stored in the summary file, you will
  82. have to discard your old catalog files and start from scratch.  Any .SUM files
  83. created with CATDISK versions before V2.10 are NOT compatible with this one.

  86. If You Were Using CATDISK V2.10 to V6.21
  87. ----------------------------------------
  88.  
  89. This release of CATDISK supports file comments of 43 characters in length.
  90. You do *NOT* have to purge your old catalog files and start over... just run
  91. the program CDISKCVT.EXE on each catalog file that you have, select the
  92. appropriate conversion option as outlined in the program and it will be
  93. converted to the new format.

  95. The syntax of this command is:
  96.  
  97. CDISKCVT catalog_name
  98.  
  99. - where catalog_name is the name of the catalog file to be converted.
  100.   (do NOT include the filename extension of .DTA on the command line)

  103. If You Were Using CATDISK V6.30 or Later
  104. ----------------------------------------
  105.  
  106. Your current catalog files are fully compatible with this release... you do
  107. NOT need to convert them.

  111. 4.  SAVING YOUR CONFIGURATION IF YOU WERE USING CATDISK V3.61 OR LATER
  112.  
  113. Before copying the new program files to your work disk, you might want to
  114. rename the executable file from the previous installation (CATDISK.COM or
  115. CATDISK.EXE) to another name.  The new configuration utility, CDISKCFG.EXE
  116. now has the ability to read the configuration information from the release that
  117. you were using for easy installation into this release.  This can save you some
  118. time in setting the program up for your preferences, particularly if you've
  119. customized all the screen colors.

  121. When you run CDISKCFG, hit <F8> and follow the prompts.

  155. 6. CATDISK PLUS UPDATE
  156.  
  157. Due to the popularity that CATDISK has achieved, and the resulting workload in
  158. keeping up with correspondence, the development of CATDISK PLUS has been
  159. significantly delayed.  Work is progressing, albeit slowly, as we adapt to
  160. the increased workload.  Additionally, as development progresses, new ideas
  161. pop up that are too good to pass up, both on the shareware version of CATDISK,
  162. as well as in CATDISK PLUS.
  163.  
  164. Recently, we have been receiving pre-paid orders for CATDISK PLUS from a fair
  165. number of individuals and corporations.  Unfortunately, these orders cannot be
  166. processed before the product is ready.  Before ordering CATDISK PLUS, please
  167. check with us either by voice at (519) 570-3523, or on our bulletin board
  168. system, The Shareware Connection at (519) 570-4132 for information on CATDISK
  169. PLUS's availability.

  178. 7.  PRINTING DOCUMENTATION
  179.  
  180. To print this README.1ST file, the revision history, the CATDISK user manual,
  181. or any of the registration forms, run the program PRINTDOC.EXE, contained in
  182. the self-extracting documentation file.  This is a menu driven program that is
  183. capable of printing the longer files, such as the user manual in a two-sided
  184. format (i.e. on both sides of the page).  The documentation files and
  185. PRINTDOC.EXE must be in the same directory.

  189. 8.  IMPORTANT NOTES
  190.  
  191. Please read at least the section on configuring CATDISK in the configuration
  192. section of the manual.
  193.  
  194. One important note to consider in the user manual.  When ARCHIVE files are
  195. mentioned, it is in reference to any type of file that contains a collection of
  196. files, compressed or not.  This currently includes ARC, ARJ, DWC, HYP, LBR,
  197. LZS, LZH, PAK, ZIP, and ZOO files.

  199.              *** NOTE TO ALL SINGLE DRIVE FLOPPY DISK USERS ***
  200.  
  201. Please read the note in the configuration section regarding setting CATDISK up
  202. to function correctly with your system, particularly the section dealing with
  203. the disk cache.  Failure to do so could result in lost data on your floppy
  204. diskettes.
  205.  
  206. If you are running on a hard drive, this note does not apply.
  207.

  211. 9.  IF YOU'VE EXPERIENCED MISALIGNED FIELDS ON PRINTED REPORTS
  212.  
  213. Some disk labelling programs have an annoying habit of placing null characters
  214. at the end of a volume label.  While this is not a fatal problem, it can have
  215. a nasty effect on the printed reports that CATDISK produces by causing
  216. misalignment of some of the fields.
  217.  
  218. The program CLEANCAT.EXE has been provided to correct this problem in catalog
  219. files that have been created with V3.50 to 4.10, or those that have been
  220. converted by the above mentioned CDISKCVT.EXE utility.
  221.  
  222. If you have noticed your printed reports appearing in this strange manner,
  223. CLEANCAT can help you.  This program will simply change all the null characters
  224. to spaces, which will appear correctly on your printer.

  226. The syntax for CLEANCAT is:
  227.  
  228. CLEANCAT catalog_name
  229.  
  230. - where catalog_name is the name of the catalog file to be "cleaned up."
  231.   (do NOT include the filename extension of .DTA or .SUM on the command line)
  232.  
  233. If you created your catalog files with a release after V4.10, the corrective
  234. procedures have been built right into the program, therefore this procedure
  235. will not be necessary.
